1. Moisturizers. Some people cannot tolerate any moisturizer during withdrawal – especially in certain stages of withdrawal, but here are the moisturizers many of our forum members like to use.  Please spot test everything to make sure the skin can tolerate the moisturizers or soaps and remember to only try one new thing at a time. Also note that the skin may accept something for a while and then become irritated at another stage of withdrawal when the same product is applied. Most people find emollients, ointments or balms made with simple ingredients to be more comfortable than creams or lotions.

MarcieMom: In summary, topical corticosteroid withdrawal is increasingly acknowledged by the dermatological community as evident by NEA taking the step to conduct a systematic review. However, we have seen that it is not easy to diagnose topical steroid withdrawal, and at the same time, removing topical corticosteroids completely as one of the eczema therapeutics may make it harder to treat the eczema/ skin inflammation. It is therefore important to recognize both the dangers of steroid misuse and underuse. Physicians should adopt an open attitude when hearing about patients’ steroid fears as totally ignoring steroid phobia would possibly alienate patients and without trust, it is making controlling eczema an uphill battle.

So i was very excited to spend the next week over Christmas at the Sunshine Coast and in the beautiful salt water beaches. Whenever i am at the beach for a good period of time (like a week or so) my skin changes incredibly, for the better. The salt heals all my wounds, pimples, red lumps and bumps and the itching goes down a lot. So you can understand why i love going to the beach. Like normal after two or three days my skin had cleared a lot. Sometimes i think it may be a bit of camouflage (like i have said before from the sun evening my skin tone out) but i also feel a bit of sun or peel is good for my skin and to encourage fresh new skin. I was hoping my skin would stay nice and clear at least for a couple of days when i return back to Brisbane so i could make an evening out of new years night. Although as soon as i returned, the next day my skin broke out worse than ever. Big deep pimples and bumps that when you scratch the head off it would weep and become twenty times more itchy. It spread all over my shoulders, chest, arms, legs and neck even when i had thought my neck had healed as i only used steroids on it for about a few months and it was looking clear/the skin was naturally creating moisture.

Gabriel first started exhibiting small patches of eczema at 10 months old. He was prescribed a “light” steroid cream by the doctor, but the eczema only became worse. The doctor then prescribed Mometasone and Elidel creams. His parents did exactly what they were instructed to do, and they watched Gabriel become more itchy and miserable before their eyes. He was then prescribed, Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment, Fluocinolone, oral antibiotics, and oral steroids.  They were instructed to apply the topical steroids 3 times a day. This therapy worked temporarily, but when it stopped working, Gabriel’s mother described his skin looking as if it were “attacking itself.”
