My white GSD dog keeps having re occuring problems with her right ear. She has steriods and antibiotcs and ear drops for couple weeks and it clears up, but then hard wax returns a month or so later, she occasionally shakes her head with it, and occassionally scratches at her ear too. This has been going on for two years now, on and off, any suggestions please? The vets have suggested knocking her out to clean her ears out and take a swab to send off, but we are reluctant to do this, as she is nearly 7yrs old, and worried how she will be with the anesetic? Is there no other way the ears can be cleaned out and a swab taken without her having to be sedated please?
Your veterinarian can recommend an ear cleansing solution that you can use on your pet every week to keep the area clean and free of potential debris and bacteria. While this may seem like a traumatic process to put you and your pet through every week, most veterinarians agree that the more regularly you perform these cleanings the easier it will get as your pet gets used to having his ears handled in this manner. If your pet is suffering from chronic ear infections, or has another condition that prompts these infections, weekly maintenance and preventative care will go far towards keeping your dog healthy and happy.
